Breakfast of champions

This morning I made my own version of the breakfast of champions: A Quinoa Flake Bowl.

Remember how a few weeks ago I mentioned ayurveda studies as part of my yoga teacher training and how my previous breakfast of smoothies apparently wasn't cutting it? How since the body is cold, slow, and and heavy in the mornings, we should be avoiding cold, slow, heavy foods?

I've been trying to take this to heart ever since. The first thing I do when I wake up now is heat and drink a cup of warm water. Then I do some exercise: either a full yoga sequence, or at least five or ten minutes of sun salutations, or even just bouncing around the apartment. 

Then for breakfast, it should be something light and warm. And that's where the Quinoa Flake Bowl comes in. Super easy to make. I first got the recipe from Mimi's Healthy & Delicious Cookbook, but basically you only need three ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup of coconut water
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 1/2 cup of quinoa flakes

Heat over a saucepan on low heat for 2-3 minutes until the flakes absorb the liquid. I usually mix in some frozen berries right at the end (which ends up making the whole thing look like pink slop, but it's yummy). I was out of berries this morning, so instead I just drizzled in a bit of honey for a little sweetness.

And that's it! Let it cool down a little, then enjoy! 

Sometimes I miss my smoothies, but I'm going to keep giving this a try, and for now I do feel better in the mornings--and less hungry, too! One more baby step on the road to a healthier lifestyle. Yippee!
